Whether you are building a new home or remodeling an older one, upgrading to a high efficiency gas boiler can provide the perfect balance of energy savings and comfort. The right investment decision can help you achieve significant savings over the life of the boiler.
U.S. Boiler Company is a leading manufacturer of home heating equipment. We have introduced more new, high efficiency products over the last few years than any other company in the history of hydronic heating. We offer a broad selection of ENERGY STAR®-certified gas-fired residential boilers, high efficiency oil-fired boilers, condensing boilers, three-pass, oil-fired steam boilers, domestic hot water heaters, and radiators.
About Boiler Efficiency
There are different types of boilers, and it’s important to consider their AFUE and ENERGY STAR® ratings, because the more efficient your boiler is, the less fuel you will use, resulting in lower heating bills.
Annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) measures the amount of heat actually delivered to your home compared to the amount of fuel you have to supply to it. An 80% AFUE rating means that 80% of the fuel is converted to heat, and the other 20% is lost out of the chimney. An AFUE of 90% means that 90% of the fuel energy becomes heat for your home, and only 10% escapes up the chimney.
Residential gas-fired boilers are required to have an AFUE of at least 80%. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) award an ENERGY STAR® label to boilers with an AFUE of 85 % or more.
High efficiency condensing boilers work by operating at a lower temperature than non-condensing boilers. Because many high-efficiency boilers are more than 90% efficient, replacing an old boiler with a new high-efficiency condensing boiler could immediately save you about 30% on your heating bills.
Advantages of Condensing Gas Boilers
Both gas and oil boilers are effective for providing heat to your home, but condensing gas boilers offer some additional advantages.
- They save space. U.S. Boiler’s ENERGY STAR®-certified high-efficiency Alpine™ gas-fired condensing boiler, for example, comes in seven different sizes, in both wall-hung and floor-mounted configurations. It’s extremely compact and can easily fit into small spaces. The new ENERGY STAR®-certified ALTA combi boiler features a simplified and compact wall-hung design.
- They have automated controls. The Alpine™ features the industry leading Sage2.2 Boiler Control System, which uses advanced technologies to constantly monitor boiler performance and safety parameters and has a touch-screen for ease of use. It also senses outside air temperatures and adjusts the boiler’s firing rate as needed.
